We were able to travel to visit two different developing countries and meet two children without leaving Maryland. This very impactful experience was made possible by Compassion International. Compassion International utilizes a holistic approach to provide social, emotional and spiritual care to children based upon Christian principles. They rely solely upon sponsorships from churches, private organizations and mostly individuals.

Compassion International currently has 6 traveling trailers that each depict the lives of two different impoverished children from countries such as the Phillipines, Uganda and Dominican Republic. We attended the Compassion Experience at the The Greater St. John Cathedral in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

During our tour, we were able to experience life through the eyes of Shamim who grew up in Ugunda, and Carlos, a young man from Guatamela. We were able to connect with each child while visiting different uniquely decorated rooms that represented places such as classrooms, medical facilities, and sleeping quarters. The rooms were small and appeared to be made of mud, clay and other inexpensive building materials. The exhibit was interactive which allowed you to use multiple senses and to truly tap into your emotions as you explored each room. The differences in the living conditions in the countries depicted in both exhibits were easily identifiable by both adults and young children.

A handheld electronic device with headphones was used to share the child’s life story in segments as you visited each room. The narrative was inclusive of sounds and music that contributed to your overall experience. At the end of the tour, you are directed to watch a short video on the handheld device that gives you an update on the child you just visited with while attempting to pull at your heartstrings to financially contribute to Compassion International as they continue their plight to meet the basic needs of other children. The Compassion Experience allows you to see the hardships, tribulations and obstacles faced by children growing up in other countries. It helps to foster a sense of gratitude for things we take for granted everyday like running water, basic school supplies and healthcare. While this experience is Christian-based, it is appropriate for children of all ages and religions. It also warrants a reflective conversation about our lives and how we can help others who have less than we do. At the end of the exhibit, you will have the opportunity to view pictures and bios of children who would benefit from a sponsorship. You are also reminded that you can visit Compassion International website to sponsor at a later date if you feel led to do so. This experience was very eye-opening and a clear reminder of the importance of being grateful for what you have and share what resources with those in need.
